Dental Sealant Q & A

What is a dental sealant?

A dental sealant is a thin coating of plastic dental material used to protect your teeth from cavities. A dental sealant works by blocking bacteria and food particles from entering into the deep fissures and grooves of your teeth.

These areas are among the hardest to clean, and they’re more vulnerable than other areas to bacteria buildup, tooth decay, and cavities. By sealing them, you make it much harder for bacteria and tooth decay to take hold.

Who needs a dental sealant?

A dental sealant is especially beneficial for children between the ages of six and 11. Between these ages, children grow most of their permanent premolars and molars. The earlier you protect these, the better. However, sealants are a great choice at any age.

On average, a dental sealant stops 80% of would-be cavities from forming for their first two years after your team applies it. For four years, it blocks up to around 50% of your potential cavities.

How do you apply a dental sealant?

Dental Studios applies a dental sealant to the chewing areas of your molars, which are the back teeth. To prep your teeth, your team first cleans them with a rotating brush and paste, then rinses and dries them.

Next, they apply an acidic etching gel to the chewing surfaces. It only takes a few seconds for the gel to roughen up your teeth and enable the dental sealant to attach to your teeth. Your team then rinses and dries your teeth again.

After this, they paint on the dental sealant, making the chewing surfaces smooth. Finally, it is hardened with a light. This process is quick and easy.

With good dental hygiene, your dental sealant can last up to nine years.

A dental sealant is an effective tool in the fight against tooth decay and cavities, especially for children. To protect your teeth or your child’s teeth, schedule an appointment at Dental Studios online or over the phone today.
