Fillers Q & A

What are fillers?

Fillers, or dermal fillers, help to improve your facial contours by plumping up your skin and smoothing out wrinkles and lines.

Fillers are an excellent choice if you wish to minimize the appearance of smile lines, vertical lip lines, and other areas around your mouth and nose. You can request fillers to complete your smile makeover or whenever you want a more youthful appearance.

Dr. Butensky explains dermal filler injections in more detail at your in-office consultation regarding aesthetic goals and specific areas of concern, whether they include TMJ pain, migraines, or simply enhancing your overall appearance.

Do fillers relieve TMJ pain?

Fillers and Botox are forms of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) therapy and can help ease tension and pain in the face, including TMJ pain. Dr. Butensky can also use fillers to relax the face, decreasing jaw tension.

TMJ pain often leads to sore jaw muscles and headaches. Injectables relieve this tension and pain by making your muscles unable to engage in the movements that cause jaw pain and headaches. You’ll still be able to move your jaw and the rest of your face naturally, but your muscles will be less tense and more relaxed.

Fillers work to treat TMJ issues, bruxism, migraines, and trigger points by chemically deactivating the muscle enough to allow it to stop being in spasm. Typically, small injections into the muscle are enough to relieve your symptoms.

How long do fillers take to work?

Dr. Butensky injects fillers or botox into specific areas along your jawbone to promote the release of tension in the muscles. After about 24-48 hours, you’ll experience a noticeable difference in jaw tenderness. As an added benefit, your skin may appear smoother and less wrinkled.

Are there any side effects of dermal fillers?

Fillers, like Botox, are FDA-approved and generally well-tolerated by most people. You might experience some redness, swelling, pain, or itching at the injection site. Side effects are usually mild or temporary, and any moderate side effects go away within two weeks.

Fillers take just minutes to receive in the office and require minimal downtime, if any. You can resume most activities immediately, but avoiding intense physical activity for the first 24-48 hours is recommended to minimize bruising and swelling.
